Ear picking is a form of ear care originating from China, emphasizing the use of delicate tools to clear out earwax and debris from the ear canal.
As a traditional craft, ear picking goes beyond just cleaning out earwax. It also involves using various safe and hygienic specialized instruments to massage and stimulate nerve points inside the ear that are usually hard to reach. This, combined with professional techniques, offers the dual benefits of purifying and invigorating the deepest energy pathways, ultimately aiming to relieve mental stress and enhance sleep quality.

Although everyone’s outer ear canal produces earwax, those with a predisposition for wet earwax may have a buildup due to the wax not being easily expelled. Over time, this can lead to blockages, causing itchiness, a feeling of fullness in the ear, and even hearing loss. Furthermore, with the increased frequency of headphone usage in modern times, earphones can block the ear canal, preventing the expulsion of earwax and humid air. The repeated contact with bacteria on earphones can inadvertently lead to infections.
The size of cotton swabs is generally larger than the outer ear canal. While they can remove some earwax, they might push much of it deeper into the ear, potentially leading to blockages. Additionally, if applied with inappropriate force, there’s a risk of damaging the eardrum. Using rigid ear spoons or picks can even cause more harm to the outer ear canal.
The frequency of ear cleaning varies between individuals. For those who haven’t cleaned their ears for an extended period or those with a wet earwax issue, it’s recommended to have their ears cleaned every 3-5 weeks to maintain a fresh ear canal. If relaxation is the primary goal, then ear cleaning can be done every 1-2 weeks.
Those with damaged ears, hearing impairment, or any ear diseases should seek consultation with an otolaryngologist (ear, nose, and throat doctor) before proceeding with any ear cleaning.
Reduce the duration of headphone usage and try to keep the insides of your ears dry. Avoid using cotton swabs or other tools to clean your ears by yourself.
